Early Buddhist Scriptures

From the beginning, the Buddhist community was in possession of rules and discourses, which they held to be the actual words of their founder. These original teachings are contained in the scripture. The historical origins of Buddhism can thus be approached only through the scriptures. The present selection, first published in 1925, aims at giving the chief characteristics as is found in Suttas or discourses and the Vinaya or book of discipline.
